Over 20 years ago, the now iconic new building of the GfZK Leipzig opened at Johannapark. It was designed and built by as-if architects based in Vienna. The project was based on the question of what a building might look like that accommodates different forms of exhibiting, researching, communicating, and gathering. The result is a “polygonal spatial structure” that manages almost entirely without right angles and is constantly reconfigured through movable walls.
as-if consists of Paul Grundei, Stephanie Kaindl, and Christian Teckert. The interdisciplinary team develops projects at the intersections of architecture, urban planning, urbanism, spatial theory, and artistic intervention. In doing so, they draw on a particular concept of space: “The ‘negotiable space’ is not an abstract space existing in and of itself; it requires actors to come into being and to exist, turns those present into participants, is process-oriented, and is determined by simultaneities.”
The exhibition tour takes place in the exhibition Wanderings About History. The Photography of Ulrich Wüst.
