The Leipzig photographer Harry Shunk (1924–2006) and his Hungarian partner János Kender (1937–2009), who worked together in Paris and New York from 1950 to 1971 under the name of Shunk-Kender, are among the most interesting art photographers of their time. They documented ground-breaking exhibitions featuring the contemporary art movements of the post-war period, covering an artistic spectrum that ranged from from Nouveau Réalisme and performance and conceptual art to Earth Art. As part of a lively art scene, they created numerous portraits of artists, documented artistic events and participated in collaborative art projects.
A selection of photographs and films from the collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris are shown here for the first time in Germany, along with photographs from the estate of Harry Shunk on themes connected with Leipzig.
