The background theme of Christodoulos Panayiotou’s solo exhibition at the GfZK is the socio-political historical construction of Cyprus, the artist’s homeland. Panayiotou is concerned with questions of the constitution of a national identity and the concepts underlying it. Several of the artist’s works arose as a result of his research in photographic archives. Despite the strong references to Cyprus, the artist regards his works rather as paradigmatic examples, making general comments on history, historiography and related iconography.
