paradoks – at the edges of documentary

From October 23 to November 14, 2021, the video art festival paradoks is dedicated to the edges of the documentary and investigates current forms of reception and expression beyond the cinema hall. With its compilation of international, contemporary positions in video art, paradoks addresses the question: to what extent can documentary images and sounds in today’s world live up to the claim of reality and authenticity and at the same time consciously problematize, break or dissolve this claim?

In the selected works, the dividing lines between documentary and fiction blur in a sensual, immersive way. Paradoks uses expansive installations, performances and discursive formats to open up a cross-genre, expanded perspective on the medium of documentary film, while at the same time directing the viewer’s gaze to current socio-political topics and problem areas.

This year’s focus is on the thematic complexes EMPOWERMENT and PSYCHEDELIC ANTHROPOLOGY, in which postcolonial discourses and consciously induced changes of state of mind and body are illuminated. A supporting program consisting of film screenings and public talks with the participating artists and curators will enable the audience to directly exchange and learn more about the artistic positions. All exhibition venues and events of paradoks are distributed throughout Leipzig’s urban space accessible free of charge.
