The “Heimat Moderne” project asks what significance the architectural, but also the social and cultural heritage of modernism still has for the identity of the city today. In many places, the functionalist buildings of post-war modernism have become a disturbance in the cityscape. At the same time, after decades of controversy and fierce criticism of modernism, there is currently a renewed interest in modernism among artists from various disciplines. In the face of global and local problems, the need for social action – beyond the authoritarian gesture of modernism, but also beyond postmodern detachment – is re-emerging.
