Through his diverse practice, in the form of performances, physical actions and enactments, the Romanian artist, dancer and choreographer Manuel Pelmuş negotiates notions of memory and commemoration, discusses the influence of performative formats on the museums of the 21st century, and scrutinizes the role of the viewer in artistic practice.
In collaboration with students from the 94th Oberschule secondary school and the Anton Philipp Reclam School, Pelmuş has developed an ongoing artistic action; the first part of which will take place on the 14th April 2018 in Leipzig’s Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz. The group plans to create a performative human monument, which will be recreated by the students at the same time every Saturday over the course of one year. During a series of workshops with Pelmuş, the students discussed at length the question of what form future memorials and monuments will take, and furthermore, what they might be dedicated to. Over the course of a year, the group will become a temporary community, which through its commitment and initiative will keep the monument alive. As a symbolic act of togetherness, the monument should become a periodic ritual and ideally should also enhearten others outside of the group to take part.
The first performance will take place at 5 pm on the 14th April 2018 in Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz.
