Lecture series open to the public
The international lecture series is organized by the Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem and takes place in three European cities. It started in Barcelona, the second part takes place in Leipzig in the GfZK and the Academy of Visual Arts, and the final stage will be Brussels. Based on a deliberately informal program, the project promotes the open exchange of ideas and concepts between students and professionals.
Werkplaats Typografie is organizing a novel educational project that is taking place extra-muros in collaboration with art institutions and universities in Barcelona, Leipzig and Brussels. Based on a deliberately informal program, it encourages an open exchange of ideas and concepts among students and professionals. Next to invited acknowledged artists, students of two academies will meet and share their concerns related to practice, theory and life.
The Werkplaats Typografie (WT), part of the ArtEZ University of the Arts is a two-year graphic design master’s program founded in 1998 by eminent graphic designers Karel Martens and Wigger Bierma. It is directed today by Armand Mevis. The WT is centred on self-initiated projects and assignments with lectures, seminars, meetings and readings geared towards self-accountable and independently motivated work and research. Despite its small scale, peripheral location and 22 students annually at most, the school enjoys a worldwide reputation.
The topic of the Masterclass series – Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it. Repeat. – refers to a quote by American painter Jasper Johns. As an
“instruction”, it is used here to resume the artistic practice of the guest teachers that will discuss their works with the participants of the Masterclasses. The program is focusing on manipulation, mutation, appropriation, repetition and sequences in the use of language, text, symbols or codes in order to achieve “something different”. The students will not only witness the importance of the process as such, but also a great variation of approaches in how artists deal with language: be it in painting, performance, choreography, expanded comic or artists’ book making. Prior to the restricted Masterclasses the invited guest speakers – visual and performing artists – will give a lecture and discuss their work and methods. These lectures are open to the public.
The HGB–Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, Leipzig together with GFZK–Galerie für zeitgenössische Kunst, will host, the second Masterclass. Invited guest teachers are:
– Pierre Leguillon (FR, 1969, artist, lives in Brussels)
– John McDowall (UK, 1958, artist, lives in London & Leeds)
– Rasmus Nilausen (DK, 1980, artist, lives in Barcelona)
