The Performance „Schwebstoffe/Suspended Solids” by Katharina Zimmerhackl is taking place in the context of the exhibition “How do we speak? A repertoire of language.”
The Leipzig-based artist Katharina Zimmerhackl works in the overlapping areas of conceptual art and theory. Her thematic focus lies on visual and literary languages and the production of knowledge, as well as history and the reflection on its writing and production – especially from a feminist point of view. Often, her work re-appropriates scientific or artistic methods, resulting in scripts, scores or notations as systems of organizing and structuring the researched material.
Recently, theatrical and narrative elements of the stage, as well as performative aspects, have become part of these participatory notations. She has studied Media Art and Graphic Design at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig and was a participant and artistic researcher at the Van Eyck Academie in 2014/15. Her work has recently been shown at Moscow MOMA, Haus der elektronischen Künste Basel, Nieuwe Vide Haarlem, Kunsthalle Recklinghausen, Halle 14 – Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig, and D21-Kunstraum Leipzig.
“How do we speak? A repertoire of language” will feature the artist’s performance work, “Schwebstoffe/Suspended Solids”. The performance is based on research into the exhibition history of LAB II – the room in which this exhibition takes place. All the titles, measurements and material specifications turn into the material for the creation of a spoken sound piece. The evocation of past artworks and their materialities questions how we come to understand an art piece, how we contextualize and grasp it, and what promises are contained within aesthetic experiences.
