Have you ever thought about leaving X or Instagram and trying alternative platforms such as Mastodon, Bluesky or Pixelfed instead? Such open source services are available free of charge for sharing images and messages. Unlike the market-dominating social networks, they are decentralized, which means that user data is not stored on a central server. They also offer a number of other advantages. In this open workshop, journalist Marie Zinkann will introduce alternative social networks.
Marie Zinkann works as a freelance editor and author for Deutschlandradio Kultur’s “Breitband” podcast and other media on topics including digital policy, artificial intelligence, cyber security and autonomous driving. Zinkann grew up in Bamberg and Prague and studied communication and media studies as well as journalism with a minor in computer science in Leipzig. During this time, she worked as a freelance media educator and volunteered at the free radio station “Radio Corax” in Halle (Saale). In 2022 and 2023, she completed a traineeship at Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk and Deutschlandradio.
