An optimistic book about sad farewells: Marian Flanders, 41, sells what are perhaps the most beautiful clothes in the world in his West Berlin boutique, but the Kenting Beach Store is rarely financially successful. When his mother Carolina—once an iconic fashion model—dies after a long illness, Marian organizes an alternative funeral service for selected guests. On his father’s former party boat, he gives a disarming speech, co-written by his best friend, and scatters his mother’s ashes on Lake Wannsee. Marian believes that this event marks the beginning of the more joyless half of life. But a year of transformation follows. Successful half-siblings and ambivalent flirtations take Marian to the Plaza Konami, Sapporo, New Delhi, and Wolfsburg, among other places. False friendliness turns into warm-hearted defiance, and subdued sadness gives way to quiet euphoria – let’s talk about feelings.
