In October, the Friends of the GfZK jointly visited the artist Sophia Kesting in her studio at Spinnerei Leipzig.
Sophia Kesting is a visual artist who lives and works in Leipzig. Her working method is composed of a feminist-intersectional perspective and consists of artistic, textual, social, collective and political practice. Artistic research, photographic-media spatial installations, long-term projects as well as lectures form her methodologies.
During the studio visit, Sophia Kesting showed a live sound set that she developed in the context of a residency in the Bavarian forest in the summer of 2023 on the topic of sustainability in art.
The sound collage consisted of field recordings, recorded texts and elements of electronic music and revolved around the concept of the Anthropocene from a feminist perspective.
Sophia also presented the artistic research project Rewriting the Photographic Image, which was presented at the end of 2022 as a book and exhibition in cooperation with the FOTOHOF Archive Salzburg. In it, she questions media conditions and gender roles of a historical slide teaching archive through photographic-performative interventions.
