Gabriele Stötzer’s art is influenced by her experience both as a woman and as a political victim of persecution in the GDR. From the 1980s onwards, she created performative photographs, Super 8 films and fashion object shows with the Erfurt female artist group. She organised exhibitions, plein air sessions and life drawing groups, which were closed down and banned by the State Security. Hände ineinander was developed in collaboration with women from Stötzer’s circle, symbolising their solidarity in the face of ongoing repression. Its compact leporello format allowed Stötzer to transport it unnoticed and display it at underground exhibitions.
