Spiritualism. Esotericism. Psychedelics. In our digitalized, inorganic world these sorts of alternatives to the Western lifestyle offer a sharper contrast than ever before within our contemporary urban society. Spiritualistic rituals have been recontextualized for urban life, combating modern isolation and the longing for belonging. Sharing is More Daring invites us to examine these phenomena from often overlooked female viewpoints, with works from artists who use a wide variety of approaches.
Lea Porsager (1981, Denmark)
In her talk, Lea Porsager gropingly handles all of her works that in turn have gropingly handled aspects of the Armenian mystic G. I. Gurdjieff’s brainy legacy. Porsager refers to these works as the G.I.G. Slime Series. Gurdjieff believed that most humans live their lives in a state of hypnotic “waking sleep” and created a collection of rituals, movements and activities for self-awakening, known as “The Work.” Porsager has used and referenced Gurdjieff’s theories and methods in several works including LEAP – Awakening of the Dark Muses (2008), Mesmerized Machines (2010) and The Anatta Experiment (2012).
Melanie Bonajo (1978, Netherlands)
Night Soil: Fake Paradise examines the significance ayahuasca, a psychedelic brew of various plant extracts, has today. She likens its potential to the mind-expanding place LSD occupied in 1960s society. In this video Melanie Bonajo asks how we can influence this ritual. What can we learn from plants? How can we care for our society? The video contains personal stories and devotes special attention to female voices that traditionally have been neglected in psychedelic research and popular culture.
Barbora Fastrová (1988, Prague) & Johana Pošová (1985, Prague)
Czech collaborators Johana Pošová and Barbora Fastrová will create a series of interventions in the GfZK garden. These installations will address themes such as the possibility of a reconnection with nature, if nature itself is a cultural concept. They examine the phenomenon of the supernatural, asking if it is not simply a part of the world that science and rationality has not (yet?) supplied the tools to understand. Can we understand and decode this reality via rituals?
