Leipzig is a city which is often described as a favourable environment for art production. There is a basic infra-structure for art production—an art academy, several art institutions and galleries, some cultural funding, a growing number or self-organized art and social spaces, well-functioning networks between the art scene and the activist scene, free spaces and relatively low rents… Nevertheless, the majority of art production in Leipzig is based on voluntary and unpaid work. Paradoxically, it seems that it is precisely the hospitable environment for self-organisation that also functions as the main precondition for self-exploitation. However, the tendency that professional artistic work is predominantly supported by second jobs or social benefits is not only characteristic to the local context of Leipzig, but a structural problem in the art field at large.
