The longing to be different from others, to be individual and to have an unmistakable identity, is opposed to those ideals of beauty and standardised conceptions that are emphasised by the media. Images of authenticity, genuineness and uprightness are deliberately used in the advertising industry to support the marketing of products and services. Here recourse is had to the same sort of formulae for pathos that are familiar from the history of art. A fund of gestures, poses, attributes, composition strategies and colour symbolisms is created which– stripped of their religious and mythological background – will be suitable for the artificial generation of emotions. In their films, drawings, paintings and installations, Markus Muntean and Adi Rosenblum work with these pathetic formulae from art history and advertising. The deliberate aim is to emphasise contradictions between pictorial and text information, passivity and activity, authenticity and artificiality, while pointing to the plurivalency of cultural codes.
Joachim Brohm – Biographie
Joachim Brohm (1955) lebt und arbeitet in Leipzig. Er studierte Fotografie an der Folkwangschule in Essen sowie 1984 an der Ohio State University in Columba/USA bei Allan Sekula. Sein Studium in den USA hat seine Arbeitsweise stark beeinflusst und sein Interesse an der Dokumentarfotografie geprägt. Seit 1993 ist Joachim Brohm Professor und seit 2003 Rektor an der Hochschule für Graphik und Buchkunst Leipzig.
Seine Werke wurden seit 1990 in zahlreichen Gruppen- und Einzelausstellungen u.a. im Museum Folkwang Essen (1990), dem Fotomuseum im Stadtmuseum München (2003) sowie dem Goethe-Institut London (2005) präsentiert und sind in mehreren öffentlichen nationalen und internationalen Sammlungen, wie im Fotomuseum Winterthur, im Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, im Museum Ludwig, Köln, in der Siemens Fotosammlung in der Pinakothek der Moderne, München, vertreten.
