Everyone knows the feeling of being a stranger, whether on holiday, on an outing or in a new city. Holiday photographs show us in new, different contexts. Classic holiday destinations, such as the mountains, the seaside or even our own garden, are experienced differently by every individual – but there is often enough overlapping of interests to get into conversation with new people. For some years now, Helmut and Johanna Kandl have been collecting holiday photographs from various places in Western and Eastern Europe. They started at the Czech-Austrian border, where their idea was to bring together the citizens of the two neighbouring towns of Znaim and Laa in an artistic event. In the local press, radio and by letter, the Kandls called for holiday photographs, which were then put together as a slide show, on posters and in catalogues, and exhibited in public places, restaurants and galleries.
