Horst Bartnig. Arbeiten aus den Jahren 1968-1998

The exhibition “Horst Bartnig” is the first major overview of the artist’s work. It goes hand in hand with the unspectacular discovery of an artist and person who, living in the GDR, never gave away his self-respect and his place. Systems, variations and distances play an elementary role in Horst Bartnig’s work. He thus belongs unmistakably to the spectrum of concrete art. Inspiration does not appear as an adversary, but as a measure of logic. The inner nesting of the elements belongs to different orders at the same time. The series declines its rational and random repertoires as long as the law of possible mutations opens or limits the free space for it. The unfolding of the formula along diagonal and vertical axes has an astonishing liveliness.
