Drawing, painting and music are the elementary vocabulary of the work of Carsten Nicolai, who was born in Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1965. Although the preoccupation with sound has occupied a predominant position in his work for several years, he also repeatedly creates drawings and paintings in parallel. Both groups of works are based on similar approaches: with symbols in one case and acoustic signals in the other, sign-like structures are created through repetition, multiplication and fragmentation, resulting in dynamic, visual as well as acoustic rhythms in mutual interpenetration and expansion. In the exhibition, both acoustic and visual works from the last two years are presented for the first time.
The exhibition is produced in collaboration with the Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen and the Heidelberger Kunstverein.
