The work of Ulrich Wüst first attracted attention in the 1980s, above all on account of his many Cityscapes, taken in several towns around the GDR. A wider international audience discovered Ulrich Wüst’s photography when he was invited to exhibit at documenta 14 in Kassel in 2017. Ulrich Wüst’s photographic œuvre, which explores Eastern Germany in the broader sense, is not confined to the sunken GDR. It might be described as a pictorial archaeology of our present day.
Matthias Flügge has curated the exhibition on behalf of the ifa – Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations. He was born in 1952 in the GDR and studied art history at the Humboldt University in Berlin. From 1978–1986, he was editor of the magazine Bildende Kunst, and from 1990–1999 chief editor and co-publisher of the magazine neue bildende kunst. He then continued his career as a freelance journalist and exhibition organiser in Berlin. In 1996, he was admitted to the Akademie der Künste, Berlin and served as its Vice-President for 1997–2006. From 2012–2022, he served as Rector of the Dresden University of Fine Arts.
During the tour, filming will take place for an exhibition film produced by the ifa.
