The project It’s not about nothing explores documentary artistic practices in two episodes, making use of both exhibition spaces at the GfZK. The works presented here examine image archives as sites of resistance and as gateways to buried histories. Found photographs and film footage, along with analogue and digital archives, provide the starting point for the exploration of struggles for freedom and exile, identity and subculture. In their works, the artists develop a range of approaches to image-based media and experiment with montage as a narrative tool. They shed light on significant historical moments and contemporary developments, including the independence days of countries across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, migrant struggles in West Germany in the 1980s, the revolutions in Iran, and the Hardtekk scene in eastern Germany.
